Poster, Limerick, Essay, and Speech Contests
Miami County Conservation District promotes the teaching of natural resources conservation by encouraging our youth to participate in the annual poster, limerick, essay, and speech contests. The posters, essays, and limericks need to be related to conservation of natural resources like soil, water, plants, wildlife, beautification, or recreation.

The theme for 2010 is Conservation Habits=Healthy Habitats

Posters: The posters may be drawn by hand or computer generated. Children are encouraged to use their creativity. The posters can be made using paint, watercolor, pencil, pen, ink, crayons, or cut paper. Any child in kindergarten through 8th grade may participate, including home schooled children.

Limericks: The limerick contest is open to children in 3rd through 8th grades.

Essays: The essay contest is open to 5th through 8th grade children, as well as home schooled children.

Speech:  The speech contest is open to all high school students in learning levels 9 through 12.
Envirothon
The district staff would like to start an Envirothon team in Miami County. We will be looking for 6-7 students, in grades 7 through 12.

The Envirothon is a friendly competition to test a team of students' knowledge in five different areas: aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, and a current issue. If interested, please contact the district office.
Water Festivals
A water festival is a fun-filled day focused on educating youth about our natural resources.  A water festival includes multiple hands-on activities that will teach children how to protect our natural resources.

Ideally festivals are setup outdoors, but can be accommodated to be inside if weather is not cooperating.

Students are split up by class or groups of 15 to 20, depending on the age and time frame. They will then rotate around to different sessions. Water festivals are designed to bring a field trip experience to the school at no cost.

The sample schedule below shows how easily 80 students can participate in four activities in just over 90 minutes.
